Tin or Glass? How Packaging Affects Olive Oil Quality

4 min read 2025-10-18ELMAR CRETE

Packaging Is Not Just Looks

One of olive oil's biggest enemies is light. That is why the choice of packaging directly affects quality. The same oil can lose value within weeks in the wrong packaging.

Tin (Metal Can)

  • Blocks 100% of light — the best protection against oxidation
  • Durable, easy to transport, unbreakable
  • Economical in large volumes (3L, 5L)
  • Ideal for secure container shipping across Europe

ELMAR's classic green tin is preferred for exactly this reason.

Dark Glass Bottle

  • Filters most UV light
  • Looks elegant on the table, recyclable
  • Ideal for daily use and gifting
  • Far more protective than clear glass

Plastic (PET) Bottle

  • The weakest protection; high light and oxygen permeability
  • Not recommended for long-term storage
  • Common in cheap products — a clue about quality

The Right Choice

  • If you use a lot → tin (5L/3L), decant into a small dark bottle for daily use
  • If you use little → dark glass (1L)
  • Avoid plastic where possible
Europe Olive Oil protects its 100% natural freshness with tin and dark-glass options that give full protection from light.
